EXCEL
EXCEL PROGRAM
What is EXCEL?
EXCEL stands for EXercise for Cancer to Enhance Living Well.
EXCEL is a FREE 12-week exercise program and study conducted by the Universities of Calgary and Toronto provided to Canadian Cancer Survivors living in rural and remote areas.
EXCEL was created to show the importance of exercise and movement in those living with cancer both during and after treatment. Exercise has shown significant benefits for reducing the physical and mental burdens of the disease ie. decreased fatigue levels, decreases in nausea & physical pain, decreased depression/anxiety, improved quality of life and daily functions, and socialization with others who are or have gone through something similar.
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common long-term side effect of those living with cancer. Evidence has shown that moving more and exercising can help manage these symptoms.
Symetrics will be running their third in person 12-week EXCEL program (2 classes per week), run by Certified Athletic Therapist, Kara Charron-Wood.
Classes consist of a 3-circuit program with 45 seconds – 1 min. per strengthening station and 1 minute per cardio station. There are 2-3 sets per circuit. Modifications will be provided by the instructor as needed.
Interested participants must first go through a pre-screening process to ensure they qualify for the program. Some may also require a doctor’s clearance to participate.
